Delete a unit
What this is
Deleting a unit removes one individual rentable space from a property. Like all deletions in TenantLedger, this is a soft delete — the unit is hidden from the property’s Units list, but its underlying history is preserved.
You delete a unit from the property’s Summary page, on the Units tab — the same place you add and edit units.
When to use it: Delete a unit you added by mistake or that no longer exists (for example, two units that were combined into one). If a unit is simply vacant between tenants, you don’t need to delete it — leave it in place so it shows as an available unit.
What blocks this delete
A unit cannot be deleted while a lease is active on it. The active lease must be ended (and removed) first.
Remove in this order before deleting the unit:
- End the lease on the unit, then remove it. (Ending and removing a lease has its own steps and rules — see the leases-and-rent move-out article in the Leases & Rent section.)
- Then delete the unit.
If a lease is active on the unit, the Delete Unit menu item opens a “cannot delete” warning instead of deleting. The pop-up reads:
Cannot Delete Unit — You cannot delete this unit because a lease is active on it. Please contact support for any questions.
Steps
- In the left sidebar, click Properties, then click View on the property to open its Summary page.
- Click the Units tab (it shows the current unit count, for example “3 Unit(s)”).
- Find the unit in the list and open its Action menu.
- Choose Delete Unit.
- A confirmation pop-up appears. Click DELETE to remove the unit, or Close to cancel.
What you’ll see
- On success: the unit disappears from the Units list and the unit count at the top of the tab updates.
- If it’s blocked: the “Cannot Delete Unit” warning pop-up appears (quoted above), telling you a lease is still active on the unit. End and remove that lease, then try the delete again.
