Delete a credit
Deleting a credit removes it from the tenant’s account. As with everything in TenantLedger, this is a soft delete: the credit is hidden from your lists and reports, but its underlying history is preserved.
Because credits can’t be edited, deleting is also how you correct a credit that was issued with the wrong amount or type — delete it and issue a new one. The app blocks the delete only when the credit has already been used (applied to a charge); an unapplied credit deletes with no trouble.
What blocks this delete
A credit cannot be deleted while it has been applied to one or more charges.
To clear the block:
- Remove the credit application(s) — un-apply the credit from each charge it’s covering. You do this from the Credit Summary page by deleting the applied amount. This restores the charge’s balance. (See “How to remove an applied credit” in Apply an existing credit to a charge.)
- Then delete the credit.
The exact message the app shows when a credit is blocked is:
“This credit cannot be deleted because it has been applied to 1 charge(s). You must remove the credit applications first before deleting this credit.”
(The number reflects how many charges the credit was applied to.) On the Credit Summary screen itself, the Delete Credit link is swapped for a quick warning pop-up that reads “You cannot delete this credit because it was applied to a charge.”
Steps
- Open the Credit Summary for the credit (from the lease’s Financials tab or the tenant’s records).
- Click the Action menu and choose Delete Credit.
- Confirm by clicking DELETE in the pop-up.
What you’ll see
- On success — the credit disappears from the tenant’s account and your lists, and you see a confirmation.
- If it’s blocked — you see the “Cannot Delete Credit” warning telling you the credit is still applied to a charge. Remove the application(s) first (which puts the balance back on the charge), then delete the credit.
Tips
- Credits can’t be edited. To fix a credit’s amount or type, delete it and issue a fresh one. See Issue a credit to a tenant.
- Removing an applied credit restores the charge’s balance, so the charge goes back to being owed.
- Not sure which charge the credit is applied to? See Why can’t I delete this?.
