Delete a lease

Deleting a lease removes it from your active lists. As with everything in TenantLedger, this is a soft delete: the lease is hidden from your lists and reports, but its underlying history is preserved.

To protect your financial records, the app blocks a lease delete while the lease still has money records attached to it. In most cases you don’t want to delete a lease that a tenant actually lived under — you want to end it instead, which keeps the full history. Deleting is for leases created in error.

What blocks this delete

A lease cannot be deleted while it has any of the following attached:

  • one or more charges on the lease,
  • one or more credits on the lease, or
  • one or more payments on the lease.

You have to clear those records first, working from the most dependent record outward. The order is:

  1. Delete the payments on the lease’s charges. (A payment can have its own blockers — for example if it was deposited. See Delete a payment.)
  2. Delete the credits on the lease. (Remove any applied credit first. See Delete a credit.)
  3. Delete the charges on the lease. See Delete a charge.
  4. Then delete the lease.

If the lease still has charges when you try, the app stops you with a message such as:

“This lease has outstanding charges that must be removed before it can be deleted. Please delete all charges associated with this lease first, then try again.”

Steps

  1. In the left sidebar, click Leases, then click View on the lease.
  2. On the Lease Summary page, click the Action menu (top-right) and choose Delete Lease.
  3. Confirm by clicking DELETE in the pop-up.

What you’ll see

  • On success — the lease disappears from your active Leases list and you see a confirmation. Its history is retained behind the scenes.
  • If it’s blocked — instead of the confirm pop-up, you see a “Cannot Delete Lease” warning explaining that the lease has records (charges, credits, or payments) that must be removed first. Clear those records in the order above, then try the delete again.
