Delete a bank account
You can remove a bank account you set up by mistake or no longer need. To protect your financial history, the app blocks the deletion when anything still depends on the account.
Before you start
- Deleting is a soft delete: the account is hidden from your active lists, but the underlying history is preserved.
- If you’ve simply closed the real account and want to stop seeing it, mark it Inactive instead of deleting — that keeps all its deposits, payments, and reconciliations intact. See Edit a bank account.
What blocks this delete
The app will not delete a bank account while any of the following point to it:
- One or more properties use this account as their default bank.
- One or more deposits are recorded into this account.
- One or more bill payments were paid out of this account.
If any of these exist, the delete is stopped and you’ll see a message naming what’s in the way, for example:
“This bank cannot be deleted because it has: 2 properties use this as the default bank, 5 deposits, 3 bill payments. You must remove or reassign these items before deleting this bank.”
What to remove first, in order:
- For each property that uses this account as its default bank, open the property and change its default bank to a different account.
- Delete or reassign the deposits recorded into this account. (A deposit that has been reconciled is itself protected — you’ll need to delete the reconciliation first. See Delete a deposit and Undo or delete a reconciliation.)
- Delete the bill payments made out of this account. (A reconciled bill payment is also protected — un-reconcile it first. See Undo or delete a reconciliation.)
- Once nothing points to the account, delete it.
Steps
- In the left sidebar, click Banking, then click the account to open its Summary page.
- Open the Action menu (top right) and choose Delete Account.
- In the confirmation pop-up, click DELETE.
What you’ll see
If nothing depends on the account, it’s removed from the Banking list and you see a confirmation that the bank was deleted. If something is still attached, the page reloads on the account’s Summary with a red message naming what must be removed or reassigned first — nothing is deleted until you clear those items.
Tips
- In most cases you don’t actually want to delete an account you’ve used — its deposits and payments are part of your books. Marking it Inactive is usually the better choice. See Edit a bank account.
